About
One For The Vines was created by two long time friends and wine enthusiasts John Hernandez and Danny Kent.
John Hernandez
Founder • Principal
John grew up in San Francisco and was surrounded by wine in all the major California appellations. He started out with Napa and Santa Cruz Cabs then off to the many Pinot Noirs of the Russian River Valley.
In 1998, Johns wife Martha wanted to go to Paris, and John said ok and “there is no way we are getting into French wines, they are too complicated and there are too many wines here in California" (Famous last words). John started to fall in love with French wines and returned to France again in 2004 and 2005, exploring Champagne, Burgundy, Loire, Bordeaux and Alcase.
In 2009, John met Brian Robsen, a thirty year veteran broker for both Burgundy and Champagne. Brian mentored John and gave him the opportunity to work with him. When Brian decided to move back to the UK, John, was asked to take over the business . This was a natural progression considering that John had already built a large business and trusting relationship with Whole Foods.
John has explored the wine regions of Italy and Spain. He has traveled to France for barrel tastings and seminars every year since 2009, hand selecting wines for the US market, and now considers Beaune his second home. John teaches both a basic French wine class as well as an advanced Burgundy class.
Danny Kent
Founder • Principal
Danny Kent knew many years ago that wine would be in his future. While living in California in the 1980s, he was surrounded by musicians and fine people, all five to ten years his senior...all of whom enjoyed wine. "There must be something to this" Danny thought.
After moving to Chicago in the 1990s, Danny started frequenting one of the city's premier wine stores. There he attended wine tastings and classes and began buying wines that would inevitably be the start of his new passion. Danny then moved to the suburbs where he continued his weekly wine tastings and began networking with many of his fellow tasters.
In early 2000, Danny was asked by a friend to assist an importer looking for distribution in particular markets here in the States. With many contacts in the wine trade, Danny quickly helped established distribution in the Midwest, hence his introduction to brokering.
Travels with private wine tastings to the Central Coast, Napa, and Sonoma regions of California became an annual event for him and many of his wine colleagues. In 2006, Danny and his wife traveled to Italy to begin their study of the Old World region. Since then he has traveled to Burgundy and continues his study and appreciation for Old World styles.
Marc Pragers
Sommelier • Liaison
After being a wine enthusiast, for 20 years, Marc completed training with restaurant professionals. He chose the sommelier training at the University of Wine in Suze-la-Rousse. The beautiful scenery and the view of the “Dentelles de Montmirail” and the excellent facilities had convinced him. Marc discovered this magnificent site, during the early 80’s at visit to the Rhone Valley. The program is one of the most advanced training in sensory analysis and tasting, in the country. This was also an exciting experience for the curiosity that it generates, and the pleasure to be immersed for half a year near the vineyards of Gigondas, Vacqueyras, and Beaume de Venise. Nowadays you may find him in the vineyards or as a juree at different tasting contests. Marc especially likes “Concours Général Agricole” of Macon and Paris. Rather than working in a restaurant, he created a YouTube channel to bring together all of his work related to wine tasting and the discovery of wineries. On that channel he also shows some tips to not let the sommelier choose for the customer, and make sure the latter has a few guidelines to choose for himself.
